The song of the Coyote, a classic sound of the desert, is often heard at
dusk and dawn from the Quailway Cottage.
Other popular visitors
include a band of Javelinas (Collared Peccaries) that enjoy eating the
many pecans and apples that have fallen from the orchard trees. Black-tailed Jackrabbits and Desert Cottontails are also frequently seen.
In
1999 the University of Kansas conducted comprehensive research at Quailway
Cottage of the Texas Horned Lizards, or "Horned Toads." This included
equipping them with radio transmitters enabling their movements to be
followed on a daily basis.
