The private garden behind the Cottage consists of desert-adapted shrubs and seasonal wild flowers as well as roses and planted trees. Across a large portion of the grounds, mesquite and acacia create natural cover and offer shelter to wildlife. Evergreens such as pine and juniper have been planted for wildlife shelter. A remnant patch of arid Chihuahuan grassland remains in one corner of the property.  Future plans include restoration and improvement of native habitat.  The managers plan to conduct a vegetation inventory in the coming year.

The orchard contains pecan, apple, and other fruit trees as well as a budded apple tree taken from the original "Johnny Appleseed" tree. Cottage lodgers are welcome to enjoy the fruits of the orchard when in season.

"The most quiet and amazing place I have ever stayed, it was heaven to sit on the patio while the breeze blew sweet scent of honeysuckle and roses."
